(Repost - Not using Google groups so those who block GG can see it) Word has just filtered through Twitter that Bob Pease was killed in a car accident. This one by the sounds of it: http://www.mercurynews.com/bay-area-news/ci_18310586?source=rss&nclic... In a sad twist, it is reported that he was returning from Jim Willam's memorial. A sad week indeed. RIP Bob Pease. Dave.

I think early reports are generally loaded with errors.

The main selling point in antiquity was that you would not always be in danger of starving to death nor could you be killed again. The key point of the "jam tomorrow" promise was that starving serfs would loyally follow their kings into battle because the established Church took 10% of what little they had off them and told them that the King was God's representative on Earth. Failure to follow His orders immediately condemned you to an eternity of Hellfire. A cunning scheme and probably the canonical "jam tomorrow" scam. It's modern equivalent in a more materialistic world is the Nigerian 419 scam - which promises a shorter wait for your share of $20M. Regards, Martin Brown

Assuming you had complete control over the state of your own consciousness in Heaven, you could decide that contemplating the number 1 was the most interesting thing in the universe to do, and do that for eternity. If by some fluke you did become bored, you could move on to the number 2, and so on. If for some reason the concept of numerals does not exist in Heaven, perhaps one could instead contemplate the empty set, and then the set of the empty set, and then the set of the empty set which contains the empty set...

Bob Pease was in the MIT Class of 1961 (I'm Class of 1962).
I can recall seeing Bob, all dressed out in lederhosen and backpack,
charging up the stairs in Building 10, multiple steps at a time,
screaming like "Roosevelt" in that old classic movie "Arsenic and Old
Lace".
I can also recall thinking, "What a weirdo" ;-)
It was distressing to me to see the accident report calling Bob, "an
elderly gentleman"... we're the same age :-(

I don't know if they did an autopsy, but I'd bet it would show a
"health event"... diabetes can make you prone to heart attacks.
(BTW, I did a similar "chain event" in my '77 280Z in an unlighted
restaurant parking lot around 1980. But my reflexes were faster and I
just scratched the hood ;-)

It might not have been a heart attack or stroke, as diabetes can also cause impaired mental function, blurred vision, and other effects that could explain an accident such as this. Either hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia can cause major problems. Also significant may be the fact that Bob was late to the memorial event and he was in a highly stressed state. I don't know if his not wearing a seat belt contributed to his death, or if that was typical for him. However tragic, and whatever the cause, it was a blessing that he died instantly and did not suffer. Paul

Look closely at google maps above. It appears that if you're not expecting the sudden 160deg turn, you'll do exactly what the Mercury News described: sail across the winery driveway and hit a tree. (I'm assuming I have the correct spot here, and he was coming from the south.) At that location, I wonder what the warning signs and guardrails look like. Or if there are any. We don't have google earth here at work, so I can't check whether the highway was downhill at that point. How would one access the accident records for a location? Find out whether it's a "death curve" or not?

About 40% of every driver on US (maybe worldwide)roads is incompetent for the task. It should be required that a STUDENT (while the brain is still growing) take 2 YEARS of driver ethics courses BEFORE the driver training course, and BEFORE they are EVER permitted to actually sit in the driver's position in the car. The problem is lame, lackadaisical governments that simply hand out a license to any fuckhead. Mainly so they can then use the retarded piggery to suck cash out of the dopes that are so bad at it that they actually endanger others. So much for the safety of those of us that DO know how to drive and DO deserve to retain a license to do so. About 30% of cops don't know how to fucking drive either. The ones that do only do because they listened intently to the instructionals.

This IS NOT a high speed road (I've been up there eons ago). Pease
was an experienced driver. And has lived that area for how long? I
just doubt that the situation caught him by surprise... but a heart
blockage can... BTDT (July, 1998).
