All it takes is time and money, lots of time and lots of money. Oh and
being single would probably help :)

Wow, this guy is hardcore. That's about what I want my barn to look

Here's the mini-lab in my office. All my engineers have a similar
setup, and we have a big shared lab where we put everything together.

Her Royal Highness won't let that happen in a million years!
So I have to make do with my 4 square meters :-(
Actually, funny enough, when we got the house it already had the garage
nearly converted into a room, we ripped the gyrocked walls out and turned it
back into a garage!

and now it's got two cars and my lab:

And we have two spare bedrooms too that must remain empty and clean by order
of Her Royal Highness!

Tsk, tsk! I can see floor!

This photo is close enough to current:
http://webpages.charter.net/dawill/Images/Bench9.jpg

It's not a workshop unless it's a dank, musty basement. ;-)

Incidentially, I see Maxon used a lot of leveller for his basement floor..
if we were to level the ancient floor here, it would take cement trucks to
do it. It would also make you scrape your head on the ceiling...

My desk is so cluttered, I use the term "deskalanche" to describe what
often happens on it.

You can still see my floor though - there's a path from the door to my
chair, surrounded by digikey boxes :-)

Over the years, I have seen very many homes where the internal garage
has been converted into an extra room, never until now have I seen one
converted back :), though what you have with your lab is a very
efficient use of the available space.

We built a 12m x 7m shed in the backyard, (google street view
conveniently showed up while the concretors were there doing the path,
and while there was still builders stuff sitting on the footpath)
parked the cars in there, that freed up the house double garage area
for a substantial workshop space. (due to the amount of paying work
increasing steadily, the space was needed). The shed was also good for
getting other stuff out of the workshop, like the mower, gardening
stuff etc. as well as "junk" that tends to get stored for years
before finally being tossed out. I keep getting tempted by the idea
of putting a basic home gym in part of the shed too, but that will be
for later.

Should put some pics up someday

Same :).

I am 90% sure that she would let me if I had to, but unless it was
really really essential, out of respect for her
I wouldn't push the matter.

Well, I have permission, actual approval, to build a barn. And I have
the land to put it on. All I need now is the money.

If my wife would be like that I would have made her leave a long time
ago. In the end I always do what I think is right and/or should be
done. Altough it helps we have the same taste in furniture, colors and

It is much easier when you are buying distress bankruptcy surplus for

Just ONE ESD mat? Pretty lame protection. There are so many
undereducated engineers out there that actually think that ESD is not a
problem.

He should have a conductive floor mat or flooring as well, and an
ionizer overhead or at least a portable one on the bench.

Households are typically pretty low humidity.

ESD gear is big business, and why most folks do not deck out their bench
all the way. They charge like the medical equipment industry does. Way
too fucking much for way too fucking little.

Also, ESD Formica sheet is easily available, and should have been the
choice here. That way, a soft, sticky mat is avoided.

If he did all that crap to the floor, he could have put down conductive
tile as well.

He probably could have gotten newer used gear on e-bay as well. Some
of that stuff looks so old, it would need new EL caps along with a full
re-cal to work reliably.

Also a bit heavy on the un-needed gear to engineer robotics circuitry.

I give it a C- for the lack of comprehensive ESD protection.

Were it not for that, it would get a B+

The guy looks pretty damned industrious though. Makes his own damned
injection molding set-up and molds. Daaaaaaaaaamn!

You _have_ a taste in furniture, colours etc?

That's part of the problem, I don't really have an opinion on soft furnishings
but am expected to offer one.

Me too. I have abominable taste in colors and clothes. Or so I'm
told... those things don't matter to me, so I have to take other
peoples opinions. If I "dress up" to meet a customer or something (ie,
not jeans and a tee shirt) Mo will sometimes look at me when I come
downstairs and say..... No.

Bad luck for her :-)

My requirements are mostly functional. But sometimes I get a crazy
idea. Last year I noticed wood-print floor tiles in a
home-depot-like-store. Those are on our kitchen wall now. Looks pretty
neat and it doesn't get stained like wall paper.

It usually takes us months to find something for our home. Getting
wall-paper, a couch, floor tiles, lamps, cabinets can take months and
a lot of travelling. Sometimes I make things like doorhandles myself
because I can't find the right ones in a shop.

I don't drink (beer) anyway. I just design dispensing systems. This
was actually for testing a system which counts the number of (beer)
bottles taken from a fridge.

Same pic I posted a while ago when we were discussing bridges, which
happened to be shortly after I finished this bridge. No too different
than how it looks today. I really need to shovel. And get that darn
drawer mounted in the desk. And put up some more power strips. And...

Some of the gear is nice, but he also has a lot of really old stuff.

That CNC machine is pretty neat.

Aha! I designed a hard liquor dispensing/metering system in the early
'70's, to make sure _exactly_ one shot was dispensed ;-)

I do not need a home lab.

We gotz mad proto labs at work.

Proto 3D development 'printer' as well.

Pretty cool stuff. The metal looks just like the printed proto does
too.

The Dave Jones I knew owned a decent sized electronics surplus shop in
the Orlando area, and his wife Bonnie worked there.
