It may be a problem with the way the wiring is run for the extension. The
phone line may run parallel to a flourescent light, an electric power run, or
a motor (furnace?).

The solution is to find and fix the induction problem, or re-run the phone
line to the extension. Try to have the phone line cross power lines at a 90
degree angle where possible.
