The answer is pretty simple- for the most part, a cellphone will not
greatly affect electronic equipment, but they do present three potential
hazards.
First, if they are operated close to other electronic devices, they can
induce voltages inside the semiconductors in those devices. They can
disrupt operation (such as clearing the display on the gas pump) and the
vendor doesn't like that.
Second, and conductor can act as an antenna, and a loop of conductor can
indeed produce a spark. This is a remote but real possibility. It doesn't
happen often, but I have observed it, and indeed the first experiments in
radio transmission showed how a spark could be produced at a distance.
Things are different now, but it can still be done.
Third, as was mentioned in another post, a faulty battery contact (or
other metal to metal switch) can cause a spark and ignite gasoline vapors.
While these are not very serious worries, mostly, they do present a
source of trouble. I tend to avoid trouble myself- you live a little longer
that way.

Cheers!
