optical alignment shouldnt be necessary as it is already done in the
factory.
The only time those pots should be changed is after a new laser pickup is
installed and some fine tuning needs to be done. On some Pioneer cd players,
a grating adjustment on the pickup itself must be done in order for it to
work.

I would check the obvious first. Dirty laser lens, check the spindle platter
for
any debris (can cause excessive disc wobble), also check to see if the
spindle
motor is worn.. Or perhaps there is an issue with the sled mechanism thats
causing it to skip (could be some dirt or grit in one of the sled gears).
Clean & Relubricate
the sled rail if its dry or dirty.

After checking all those, I would then start investigating the functionality
of the optics.

I certainly suggest leaving the alignment alone. if u must adjust them, draw
a thin
black line on each pot so u can return it to its original setting if u stuff
it up.

Find out if the skipping is intermittent? Does it happen only when a certain
part of the
disc is reached?

Alex.
