I have a question about the operation of a cellular phone. Does the phone transmit an identification signal when not being used or is it just sitting passively listening? The reason I am asking is that I am interested in a 'transportable' phone for my car, but I am concerned about sitting in an enclosed metal space with a near-microwave transmitter next to me if it is constantly radiating when plugged in and turned on. (Admittedly the power is quite low, but travelling in the car for hours a day, five days a week - I wonder what the effects of long-term, low power exposure are, especially to the eyes?) R.
