Talking to lurker on kbd interface

Gentle netfolk,

I'm in the process of trying to put together a device which can plug
in between an IBM PC compatible and its keyboard, and communicate in
some reasonably quick fashion with an application running on the PC.

The device (which I'll call a lurker, since it lurks around on the
keyboards communications and interjects only when necessary) is easily
able to send, simply by blocking the keyboard from sending and
pretending to 'type' to the application in the normal keyboard-like
fashion. The difficulty to my mind comes when trying to get
information back out to the lurker. There doesn't appear to be a bios
supported way, which I suppose isn't all that surprising. :-)
Possibly directly talking to the keyboard controller
device might work, but that makes me vaguely uneasy and I'd like to
find a better way if possible.

Has anyone seen this done before? Is there (wishful thinking) example
code somewhere I could look at? Have you any other suggestions - good
or bad? If so, please email as well as posting since I'm trying to
make some progress on the design during this weekend, and news
propagates rather more slowly than email.

Many thanks
phil
