1) PhD Research Opportunity in a top Department with a new purpose built
building.

The department has an EPSRC Studentship available for research leading
to a PhD degree in one of the following areas:

     Advanced separation processes
     Biomaterials & tissue engineering
     Biomechanical engineering
     Catalysis & reaction engineering
     Enhanced oil recovery
     Environmental engineering.

All applicants, should hold a First or Upper Second Class degree in
Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related
subject.(Please note students who are liable for overseas fees are not
eligible for this award).

The Department of Chemical Engineering (research rating 5A) offers
excellent research facilities in an interdisciplinary environment, and a

quality doctoral training programme. Applications by way of a CV and two
references should be sent to:

Dr John Hubble,
Director of Postgraduate Studies,
Department of Chemical Engineering,
University of Bath,
Claverton Down,
Bath BA2 7AY

(Tel: 01225 826221 Fax: 01225 826894 e-mail J.Hubble@bath.ac.uk) or
visit our web site at: http://www.bath.ac.uk/Departments/ChemEng/

Closing date for applications: 1 December 2000, the successful applicant
must commence their studies by 31 March 2001.

2) EPSRC Research Studentship

The role of hydrophobicity and charge in determining membrane
cleanability

In collaboration with the Lappeenranta University of Technology,
Finland, a Ph.D. studentship is available in the area of membrane
fouling and
cleaning.

Working with beer, the project aims to characterise the effects that
multiple fouling and cleaning cycles have upon membrane performance and
lifetime for yeast cells and cell debris fouling microfiltration
membranes.

The objectives of the project include:

To investigate how the performance of a flat sheet microfiltration
changes as a function of the cleaning regime for over a number of
operational cycles,
To determine whether steady state filtration performance of yeast and
whey protein solutions are affected by the prior fouling and cleaning
regimes,
To examine fouled and partially cleaned membranes by using a range of
analysis tools to link surface characteristics to membrane performance.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath is one
of the leading centres for membrane research in Europe.

The project is available immediately, but can commence at any agreed
date before February 2001, and applications are encouraged up to this
time.

Applicants should send or email a CV with the names of two referees to:

Dr Michael R. Bird,
Department of Chemical Engineering,
University of Bath,
Claverton Down,
Bath BA2 7AY.

For further details contact: Dr Mike Bird, Telephone (01225) 826336 or
e-mail: M.R.Bird@bath.ac.uk
