Murray Wonham is a sharp guy. In the 60's and 70's he developed a
geometric theory for "state space control" theory. Check out his book
"Linear Multivariable Control: a Geometric Approach." In the past 10
years or so he has developed theories for discrete event systems.
Check out the Ramage/Wonham papers. He has applied "state space
control" methods to discrete event (dynamic) systems. What is a
"minimal realization" for a continuous system is a "trim realization"(?)
for a discrete event dynamic system. (It's been a while since I read
any of this stuff.)
