I agree with the above assessment of Kailath's book with the following 
addenda.  It is a great reference book, it is good for people with a 
good background in system theory already, if you were to teach an
advanced undergrad or introductory grad course, Kailath's book assumes
a tad too much in terms of background.  Georgia Tech used Kailath
when I took the course, I hated the book then, but have grown to appreciate 
the insights and richness of his treatment now.  The book that they use 
now is Brogan, which I think is better suited to the beginning grad
school audience.  

IMHO, of course.
