I don't know of anyone who sells these, even as kits, but here are some ideas: 1. Instead of the ball-screw drive, why not use an aircraft steel cable string between two pulleys/bobbins. This is the kind of approach I've seen in most pen plotters for moving the pen, and in a few printers for moving the printhead. It seems to work well, without much stretch. 2. Another possibility - a Gilmor (spelling?) belt between pulleys. I've seen these in a lot of lower-priced printers. These are the toothed flexible belts, where the pulleys may or may not have teeth that mesh with the belt. 3. Instead of the pot for the pivot, you consider one of HP's cheap optical encoder pot replacements. They are probably rather more expensive than a pot (I think about $20), and need a decoder chip, but are quite precise and have really good repeatability. We used these in one of our projects with good success. -- Erik Horstkotte, Togai InfraLogic, Inc.
