I recently attended a Fuzzy seminar at the Omron facility in Sch. They had two demos of what they claim is the only "true" fuzzy controller. One demo was the pendulum. The feedback for the balanced stick came from a reostat on the pivot point and balance compensation came from circular motion of the base. Several golf balls could be balanced on a dish!. The second demo was temperature control. This was more interesting in that the fuzzy solution to PID was only used to maintain or recover temperature fluctuations, but not to reach the initial temperature. I pressed the demonstrator, but he never gave me a satisfactory answer as to why fuzzy was not used for the whole cycle. Except to say that it did not work. Both demo's used existing commercial hardware, with some modifications for the pendulum. The temp controller is available and Omron has a fuzzy logic module available for their large scale PLCs, 1024 I/O. Jerry Oleksy BIRL Northwestern University joleksy@casbah.acns.nwu.edu,edu
