UPDATED November 19th, 1992.
A roughly put together survey regarding graduate student funding levels,
conditions, and other stuff. This survey shows a great variety of situations
which cannot be put into good or bad categories. If some of the facts are
indeed not facts, please send me e-mail (hugh@engrg.uwo.ca), or if you want
to be added, please send some e-mail.
(Please Note: FIGURES WERE CONVERTED TO CANADIAN FUNDS USING THE FORMULA
1.0 $CDN = $0.8 $US, U.S. DOLLARS HAVE A 'us' IN FRONT,
CANADIAN HAS A 'cdn' IN FRONT)
Some factors to consider (probably wrong, and over generalized):
- US students will have to support Health Insurance (avg us500),
and health care costs are not deducted.
- I believe Canadian taxes can be slightly higher (they include healthcare),
but no tax is deducted from the figures given.
- TA = Teaching Assistant
- RA = Research Assistant
- Tuition is tax deductable in canada, along with some living expenses
- Scholarships can often discard all funding schemes, or might not make
a difference depending upon the size.
- Fees are always(?) higher for non-canadians in Canada, and in the US
the fees are always(?) higher for out of state people.
- Many full time grad students have restrictions on the number (or any)
hours worked outside the department. This seems to be intended to
focus the studies, but also limits other possible sources of income.
