WANTED: Scientiststists and engineers interested in corresponding with
eighth graders through e-mail to help answer basic physical science
questions.
Just think how exciting it would be for a young person to
communicate with an academic professional and to solve real life
science problems that affect our world today! So many youths do
not realize the importance of math and science or are intimidated
by the complexities. We need professionals like yourselves, with an open
mi nd and enthusiasm for teaching, to help out students at Peterson Middle
School. For just once a month, or however frequently you decide, you
can commu nicate with one or two students through e-mail.
Nervous about talking to kids? Don't worry, Bryan Osborne,
the Peterson Middle School science teacher, will provide you with some
helpful guidelines and ideas that have proved very successful with
past volunteers. His "Helping Hands" program (corresponding by
e-mail) is growing rapidly with the need for more volunteer
mentors to correspond with the interested students.
Feel free to send him a message at bosborn@eis.calstate.edu, or
call him at 408-720-8540.
