Symposium on Deployable Structures:
Theory and Applications
6-9 September, 1998
Cambridge, U.K.
SCOPE OF THE SYMPOSIUM
Deployable structures
technologies are used for
booms, solar arrays, and
antennas on spacecraft; for
portable shelters and
retractable roofs; and for
kinetic sculptures, toys, and
exhibition displays. Often
these technologies have been
developed by trial and error
and for a specific application,
but the current growing demand
for deployable structures
requires a new approach. Thus,
there is a need to develop new,
generic solutions and to
understand better the
underlying principles of the
solutions that already exist.
Among the general results that
have already been established
are folding conditions for
two-dimensional and
three-dimensional structures
with "scissors" joints,
packaging conditions for thin
membranes, computational tools
to identify singular
configurations (kinematic
bifurcations) along a
deployment path, shape
optimisation methods for
variable geometry trusses.
Recent advances in the
computational modelling of
multi-body systems have led to
more accurate simulations of
the folding and unfolding
processes, and more detailed
experimental work is being
carried out to examine the
accuracy of these simulations.
New opportunities exist for
designing special,
geometrically bi-stable
structures using composite
materials.
Deployable structures is a
cross-disciplinary field, but
so far contacts between
different disciplines have been
limited. The broad aim of this
meeting is to promote a greater
interaction between inventors,
engineers, mathematicians,
architects and others who are
interested in this growing
field. More specific objectives
are:
o To review deployable
structures concepts, including
folding and deployment
principles.
o To investigate the mechanics
of folding and deployment using
theoretical, computational and
experimental approaches.
o To examine the performance of
the simulation tools currently
used in industry.
o To identify open problems and
areas where new
inter-disciplinary
collaborations can lead to
significant advances.
