KJ>A friend of mine is looking for (preferably) Macintosh software
  >(application, spreadsheet, ...) to calculate shear, deflection, and
  >tension forces on wood timbers used in timber-frame and other types of
  >exposed beam construction. He especially wishes to determine timber
  >sizes for exposed beam roof rafters and floor joists.

KJ>Please write to me (khj@cs.appstate.edu) if you know of anyone that
  >might have such software.

I am sure that the folks at _Fine Woodworking Magazine_, at the Taunton
Press in Newtown, CT, would be able to help your friend. Or just pick
up a copy of the mag at any better magazine shop and peruse the ads.

Also - have you checked with the Forest Products folks of the US Dept of
Agriculture?
