As you may or may not know, the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors is rewriting the Professional Engineers Act. The rewrite affects all engineers who are or may some day be in private practice and affects engineers whose fields were not previously regulated. The Board is holding public forums on their proposed concepts for rewriting the PE Act. The rewrite will include "generic" registration, stronger enforcement, fewer exemptions, and better oversight of firms. One purpose is to eliminate the conflict between practice and title act engineers. Another driving objective is to be consistent with the national model for NAFTA and comity. This includes: Regulation of practice areas associated with the title acts rather than just the title Increasing the experience requirement from 6 to 8 years (which means increasing work experience from 2 to 4 years if you have an ABET accredited BS degree in Engineering) Adding the fields of Aeronautical, Ceramic, Environmental, Mining/Materials, and Structural Not accepting new registrations in Quality, Safety, Traffic, or Corrosion (unless they become areas of testing by NCEES) ----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+---- California Professional Engineers Act Rewrite Forums Schedule San Bernardino San Bernardino State Building (Auditorium) Wednesday, July 12 303 West Third Street 6:00 - 8:00 pm San Bernardino, CA 92401 Los Angeles Junipero Serra State Building (Room #1122) Thursday, July 13 107 South Broadway 6:00 - 8:00 pm Los Angeles, CA 90012 Fresno Cal Trans (Basement Conference Room) Thursday, July 20 1352 West Olive Street 5:30 - 7:30 pm Fresno, CA 93728 Orange County # 10 Civic Center Plaza (Board Hearing Room) Thursday, August 3 Corner of Broadway and Santa Ana Blvd. 6:30 - 8:30 pm Santa Ana, CA 92701 San Diego Holiday Inn on the Bay (Coast Ballroom) Thursday, August 17 1355 North Harbor Drive 6:30 - 8:30 pm San Diego, CA 92101 San Jose San Jose State Univ (Engineering Bldg.
