On a purely empirical basis I've found that apart from the zoom depth
the number of iterations required to produce a converged result will increase 
the longer the forcing sequence is

eg "aaaaaabbbbbb" will take a lot longer at any given depth than  "ab"

If you use too low a number the resulting picture looks as if the paint has
been smudged, adjacent pixels may not have converged to the "correct" value.

Once I've done a draft picture I usually turn up the iterations to a million
and leave it running until the next day. ( I'm not using fractint )
