This sounds like a filtered description of one of Iterated Systems Inc's
demonstration images. They have a whole range of products by now, and
a whole range of demo images. The reptile is one on which the zoom-in
trick works nicely. Someone commented on this in another thread: you
are of course conjuring up information if you zoom in further than the
original definition. The additional data is manufactured through
interpolation --- fractal interpolation in this case. If the original
picture was highly self-similar, this procedure yields a remarkably
convincing blow-up. Definitely better on the eye than growing square
pixels, but no use if you want to read the number plate on that spy
photograph of yours...
The people doing the work are headed by Michael Barnsley,
previously of Georgia Tech. They patented their algorithm,
but a book on the techniques has just appeared (see the post
on the new fractal image compression book).
For info on their pricey products, contact Iterated Systems at
5550A Peachtree Parkway, Suite 545, Norcross, GA 30092.
