And so DEEPZOOM which displays 72 digit arithmetic Mandelbrot Set
computations was hatched. There are now 138 potental Mandelmaniacs
who might, as Arthur C. Clarke described, become mentaly locked in
a 40 digit deep zoom into the Mandelbrot Set.

[GIPPP, coined by Jon Noring, stands for Grand Internet Parallel
Processing Project]

The gif save routine should be able to save not only the standard
sizes (320x200, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768) but whatever size we
want such as 352x250 which is the usual size for mpeg, according
to the mpeg FAQ.
Meanwhile, email (on this latest GIPPP) from: Neil Barton-Greenwood

Several things are happening.
First, Michael Sargent <msargent@moose.uvm.edu> is helping me with
the gif save problem and others have also offered to help. This
is not a trivial issue. Attempts to adapt gif routines published
by Craig A. Lindley (Practical Ray Tracing in C) and by Roger Stevens
(The C Graphics Handbook) have so far failed.
Wesley Blake Loewer is developing an integer arithmetic package in
assembler for the MSDOS version which should speed up the computing.
Gary Hansen <gary@astro.as.utexas.edu> suggested that the picture
should be interuptable with ability to restart. I agree, this
requires gif read as well as write.
Hugh S. Myers <hsmyers@holonet.net> is creating a portable C version.
Timothy Wegner <WEGNER_T%HOUSTON1@mwmgate1.mitre.org> has made
helpful suggestions. And several others are considering the porting
to other platform problem.
We can attack a major DEEPZOOM mpeg when these issues are solved.
Meanwhile, I enjoy searching out interesting regions for candidates
for such projects. I invite any suggestions for coordinates which
we could use for an mpeg zoom movie. There is nothing to stop one
from making a sequence by 'hand' but it would take a lot of time.
I have several ideas for methods which might greatly speed up the
calculations but these cannot be implimented while the gif writing
problems exits.
Perhaps the extended precision routines will become a part of
Fractint, that would be very interesting.
Warmly,
Jay "Not tonight honey, I'm testing a new signature" Hill
