Yes and no.  Yes, there is an expression using the coefficients of
a certain Laurent series.  But there is no known closed form for those
coefficients, so (by taking many terms) we get just an estimate.
So: no, attempting to estimate the area by other methods is not
a waste of time.  [Pixel counting without a prior mathematical analysis
of what it is doing may, in fact, be a waste of time, but not
for the reason you give.]
