I have been working on a distributed fractal engine for the past two weeks and I now have something worth showing off. It is early, early alpha, limited in features, and probably won't compile unless you have an SGI, but maybe I can drum up some interest to change this. Just to make some of you jealous, I can compute the mandelbrot world at 800x800 pixels to 1000 iterations in less than one second. Ok, by the time it gets through the X server it takes maybe two seconds to get on the screen, but let's not pick nits. You will need X11R4, Motif libs, a few spare workstations (15 unused r4000 Indigos will do) and a network with reasonably fast UDP connections. Scarf it at your own risk via anonymous ftp from archive.cs.umbc.edu in /pub/peter/net-fract/net-fract-7-14.tar.Z. Comments and criticisms welcome. Remember, she's still a baby and growing quite rapidly. Peter Johansson peter@cs.umbc.edu
