I apologize if this is not suitable for this newsgroup.
I am a Japanese student of physical oceanography, and wondering whether
the word "downwelling" is correct. For me, it sounds strange because
"to well" means "to rise to the surface" --- "to rise down???" ---.
So my questions are:
1. Does "downwelling" sound strange?
2. Is it common to English-speaking oceanographers?
3. If not so, what is the word or phrase opposite to "upwelling"?
One can find "downwelling" in the article, Masuda & Uehara (1992),
Deep-Sea Research, Vol.39, No.9, pp.1453--1479, which is about oceanic
deep circulations.
Thanks in advance,
