Cc'd to David G. Grier and Gilbert S Pajela.

A quick correction here, if I may. ENVI is not a point-and-click
interface to IDL. ENVI is an image processing application built
entirely with IDL. It is especially suited to working with multi- and
hyper-spectral image datasets.

There is no point-and-click interface to IDL per se. You can build full
GUI apps using IDL's widgets. They are virtually indistinguishable from
Motif widgets. It is also fully functional on MS Windows and NT, and on
Macs and PowerMacs (native and very fast), and uses the corresponding
GUI of each platform. A VAX/VMS version is also available.

Here's a little more contact info and a WWW page to check.

There is also a very similar package to IDL called PV-Wave from Visual
Numerics, Inc. (VNI). The IDL code was purchased by Precision Visuals
(now a part of Visual Numerics) in 1990. The products have been
developed independently since that time. PV-Wave's base product offers
similar capabilities to IDL, but other products in the PV-Wave line-up
surpass IDL at an additional cost. PV-Wave lacks the cross-platform
capabilities of IDL, though. VNI offers a limited version of PV-Wave
for PC's.

Here is VNI's contact info:
Visual Numerics, Inc.
6230 Lookout Rd.
Boulder, Colorado 80301 USA
Tel: (800)447-7147, (303)530-9000
FAX: (303)530-9329
Email: pvwave@boulder.vni.com
http://doc.boulder.vni.com:80../pvwave.dir/wavehome.html

I use both IDL and PV-Wave on a daily basis. I have maintained the IDL
FAQ in the past, and am currently maintaining the PV-Wave FAQ.
