I would like to thank everybody who responded to my message and offered helpful advice. My first question, repairing damaged TIFF files, remained unanswered. What surprises me is that the TIFF architecture is obviously designed in a way that one or a few bad characters can ruin the whole image. If a few ink spots cover some letters of a printed page, I can still read the text. Similarly, software should be able to read a slightly damaged file. I am using Apple Macintosh computers since the time the first Mac II appeared on the market. It is for sure that they used to be very reliable and I know how to operate them and keep them running. It appears that the frequent hard disk crashes and the data loss I described are most likely related to the following problems: Kevin.Singer <isingerk@info.curtin.edu.au> writes: Dietmar, your problem with the Q800 sounds almost identical to my experience. I have an almost identical system [Q800, 24Mb, 1Gb HD, CD, Apple scanner, PLI removable 88Mb cartridge drive]. Over an extended period, where each element was checked after repeated failure of the HD and numerous errors -just as you have described, the following items were checked / replaced: RAM, HD - reinitialized several times - reloading original software from scratch each time, different boot hard drives. Finally the logic board was replaced [under warranty] and the problem disappeared. Stein Roervik <steinr@kjemi.unit.no> writes: This does probably not help you much, but I have a similar disk in my PC, and recently experienced some serious startup/boot problems. I called a PC workshop, and the engineer there told that the Seagate ST3xxx series was in general unreliable. The mechanical design is not good...... ****************************************************************** * Dietmar Tietz, Ph.D., Research Scientist * * Biostatistics, Justus-Liebig-University * * Ludwigstr. 27, D-35390 Giessen, Germany * * Phone: +49-(641)-702-9733 * * Fax: +49-(641)-702-9724 * * Email: Dietmar.Tietz@Uni-Giessen.de * ******************************************************************
