NIH Image is a Mac application, under continued development by Wayne
Rasband at the National Institutes of Health, where apparently it is
widely used by many researchers. (But it is also used by many computer
vision scientists like myself because of its combination of useful
interactive visualization and publication tools.)

I have used Khoros - which is extensibly BIG (100 meg static binaries
vs NIH Images low-fat <1 meg.) and others X software. NIH Image is
handy.

It can be found among the Mac applications, by anonymous ftp to
sumex-aim.stanford.edu or other popular Mac archive sites.

NIH Image is one of the really useful and free programs.
