1) Collect the frequent questions first.
2) Obvious short lines like addresses, references, etc. can be placed
in a file NOW. One can add to these over time. They should not need
discussion.
3) Set up news on a Unix system to have the system chronometer (cron)
post automatically at some frequency (.crontab or /etc/crontab or
/usr/lib/crontab). Inevitabilty, you will get this wrong. Adjust.
Monthly is too short, weekly for the same file is too many, the problem is
that news expires at different rates on different systems. Current
methodology is to spread a set of linked but different files at intervals.
4) Novices have a hard time reading files longer than 200 lines. They have
neither figured out how to search nor skip postings so they frequently
page or scroll to the bottom to get to the next post. Forget about
Killfiles. Too hard for many of them. Non-unix based news/notes systems
and gatewayed groups present even different problems.
5) Not every one has anonymous FTP.
6) If you are really lucky, set up a mail server daemon like netlib.
7) You will never satify everyone. You will still always get noise and
insipid arguments to discuss boring frequently asked questions get
flame wars.
8) Try to protect yourself with disclaimers refraining for medical or
legal questions, netiquette (e.g., GIFs to alt.binaries.pictures, etc.).
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
