There has been a lot of discussion about image processing
packages, and programs for converting between image formats.

My favorite public domain package is ALV - autonomous land
vehicle for suns written by Phil Everson. I am surprised that
more people dont know about, and I have not seen it
mentioned on the sip. It is an
excellent package that provides most of the things one
wants in an image processing package and more (except a
FFT routine). It even provides the hooks to extensions
to the package. It is available by anonymous ftp from
various sites - ask archie for the site nearest to you.
If you cannot ftp, send mail to the address below:

JANET: everson@uk.ac.bris
ARPA: everson@cs.bris.ac.uk
BITNET: everson%uk.ac.bris.cs@ukarl.bitnet

If you still have trouble, send me mail (but please try the above
first!).

For converting between image formats the easiest
package to use by far is Jef Poskanzer (sp?). The public domain
package is called pnm, or its older version is pbm.
this a truly *complete* package for converting between
formats. The code is very portable. It is also available
by anonymous ftp from various sites. ask archie for details.
i think (i may be wrong), it may be on uunet.uu.net.

That is my $.02.
