So for those of you who are really interested, join your countries standards
organization and get involved. If your country is not actively involved
you should be able to attend meetings in other countries and be able to
not only get copies of the proposed standard, but have a voice in what it
looks like. I agree with the ISO position in having a limited distribution
of documents (I could care less about how they finance themselves) because
this will force those who need the advance information to get involved.
Most people involved in creating standards are volunteers (the rest are
volunteered by their company) and additional volunteers are always welcome.

The August meeting is an interim meeting (contact Marty Deacutis for more
details). The next regular meeting of X3H3.8 is September 14-17th 1992 at the
Union Station Hotel, 1001 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203 (phone 615-726-1001).
The next X3H3 meeting is at the same place on the 18th of Setember. Basically
all of the technical work goes on in the subcommittes and the X3H3 meeting
consists of hearing reports from the subcommittes and taking offical votes.

If you plan on joining you will need to have a letter of support from your
company saying in effect that they will send you to the meetings (membership
means attending 2 out of 3 meetings) and that you will do work between meetings
(subcommittee work and responding to letter ballots), and a resume which shows
that you have technical expertise in computer graphics or image processing.
You can join X3H3 or X3H3.8 (the cost is the same and is at least $250). The
advantage of joining X3H3 is that you get information on the other subcommittees
while the disadvantage is that you have to respond to letter ballots on the
work being done in the other subcommittees. The letter of support and resume
are to be sent (or if you show up at the meeting) to the Vice Chair of X3H3.8
if joining only .8 or to both Vice Chairs if joining both.

The Vice Chair of X3H3 is:

	Mark Skall
National Institue of Standards and Technology
	Tech Building 225 Room A266
	Gaithersburg, MD 20899
	(301) 975-3264
	skall@ecf.ncsl.nist.gov

The Vice Chair of X3H3.8 is:
	Martin Deacutis
	Eastman Kodak
	One Alewife Place
	Cambridge, MA 02140
	(617) 349-2940
	deacutis@btc.kodak.com
