There is no FAQ for this newsgroup yet - it is still rather new.

But let me remind folks that there are FAQ's in a number of other
related newsgroups that answer a number of the questions asked in
this news-group. Here is a partial list of related newsgroups: 

	Comp.graphics
	Comp.graphics.research
	Comp.graphics.visualization
	Alt.graphics.pixutils		<< for file format and conversion
						packages, especially
	Comp.compression
	Comp.compression.research

	and all of the Alt.binaries.pictures.*  groups post the same
	  FAQ more of less that explains some common image file formats
	  and viewer programs for PC/Mac/Unix/et.al. 

I don't know if all of these groups have FAQ's, but all FAQ's are always
cross-posted to News.answers. ( Comp.archives is another good newsgroup
to check if you think your question may be a Frequently Asked one to 
SOME newsgroup! )


I recommend the FAQ in Alt.graphics.pixutils especially. 


Also, ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu:/misc contains an archive of various sound and
graphics file formats ( or pointers on where to get more info, if on-line
documents were not available. If you have something that's not on their
list, please contribute to this repository. Someone once made wonderful
PostScript chart of PBMPlus conversion capabilities that I have hanging
on my wall. I don't know where I got the original, but it's a great guide 
to "can I get from X to Y format?" )

 I would NOT mind seeing some image processing and scientific applications
 oriented discussion of image file formats in this group, especially as it
 relates to image archiving and retrieval, tagging and annotation of 
 experimental data, management of large image libraries, etc. 
 Most of the other groups above are only interested in "pretty" pictures. ]
