We are looking seriously at the new Tektronix Phaser-IISD which uses dye sublimination. It seems quite capable of varying the density of a single dot. Our application is also grey scale only. The "media" is avaiable in black only which somewhat lowers the cost per page. My biggest concern is that most of the software seems to assume that the differing scales of grey need to be "created" by dithering or the like and doesn't seem capable of creating a Postscript file for printers which can do differing dot densities.
