G'Day

I am about to comence work on a digitised mapping project, the
details of which are irrelivant except to say that I need to
find a image format that has the best trade off between
storage space and retreival speed. If anyone could make
any recomendations as to the image format that would be best
suited (and which is best in both catergories) than it would
       be most appriciated.
