half tone removal?

I am looking for efficient algorithms for halftone removal. One way that
I know is doing FFT first to find the halftoing frequency and then
lowpass filter the image. However, FFT is somewhat difficult and costly
for hardware implementation.

Is there any spatial domain method for the halftone frequency detection?
All advices and pointers are welcome and appreciated.

Please email your answer to me if it's convenient to you. Thanks.

Alex
