Announcing the availability of the text
JPEG Still Image Data Compression Standard
by
William B. Pennebaker and Joan L. Mitchell
published by Van Nostrand Reinhold (VNR)
650 Pages, $59.95
Here is the first in-depth description of the new JPEG International
Standard for digital compression of continuous-tone still images.
The JPEG standard defines a tool kit of processes for lossy and lossless
encoding and decoding of images. With the publication of this singular
work--written by two of the standard's editors--the hows and whys of
JPEG are made available along with explanations of the actual standard.
Both of the standards documents which specify JPEG are reproduced in
appendices for easy reference. (These are well worth half of the price
of the book by themselves.)
This new guide to JPEG and its technologies offers detailed information
on the JPEG modes of operation, signaling conventions and structure of
JPEG compressed data. At the same time, it provides a general review of
image coding techniques, with an emphasis on JPEG-related topics such as
Huffman coding, arithmetic coding, predictive coding, QM-coding, and the
discrete cosine transform. To help place JPEG in its proper context, a
brief overview of both the JBIG (Joint Bi-Level Image Experts Group) and
MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) standardization efforts is provided.
This invaluable book includes several examples of reconstructed JPEG
images, a complete review of the DCT and state-of-the-art fast DCT
techniques, a sampling of JPEG vendors and applications, the Backus-Naur
form of the JPEG syntax and much more. It is must reading for engineers,
programmers, consultants, vendors, researchers, and students across the
image processing and multimedia fields.
The book will be available at this year's COMDEX at the VNR and IBM
booths. The book may be ordered from the following sources:
