Creating fractal codes

I'm looking for information, preferably source code, that converts
images or parts of images into fractal codes. I originally tried to get
fractal compression code but most of it seems to be proprietary and so I
failed. I'm not really interested in the compression side of it since I
want to use fractal codes in a pattern recognition project so if anyone
has any code or information on converting images into fractals I'd be
very grateful.
