For a fast version of the hit-or-miss transform (hence erosions,
dilations, etc), check out
"Methods for Fast Morphological Image Transforms Using Bitmapped
Binary Images" in CVGIP: Graphical Models and Image Processing,
Vol. 54, No. 3, May, pp. 252-258, 1992.
They provide pseudocode (there are two small mistakes) which is
easy to code-up.
