NIH Image (or similar) on Unix/X?

We are looking for a general-purpose program for editing and annotating map
images. I have used NIH Image for lots of things, and it works just fine.
Trouble is, we need to put this project on Sun Sparcstations running
OpenWindows, and olwm or twm, etc. (i.e. the X-window system).

Anyone heard of a port of NIH Image, or a similar program? Or should I
just go do it?

You said it! Having used many overblown X-based systems, what the
world really needs is a decent port of NIH Image - which is very
elegant, useful for publication, quick inspection - and it is free!

A great tool. I wish there was an X version - with a simple interface
for adding simple user programs.

Well, there is Khoros, but is might fit under your proscription of
being "overblown" since it is HUGE. But it is pretty complete. And,
it is free.

Here's the description from the comp.graphics FAQ:

Khoros, a huge (~100 meg) graphical development environment based on
X11R4. Khoros components include a visual programming language, code
generators for extending the visual language and adding new application
packages to the system, an interactive user interface editor, an
interactive image display package, an extensive library of image and
signal processing routines, and 2D/3D plotting packages. Available via
    FTP as pprg.eece.unm.edu:pub/khoros/*.

NCSA also has excellent, free visualization software. I have used
their Mac products (which have been commercialized and improved by the
company Spyglass (217)-355-6000). I have been told their X versions
do fine also. The documentation is good. NCSA Image is a bit leaner
than NIH Image, but is well worth having. For for editing and
annotating, see Layout (or Transform from Spyglass). These
products can be downloaded via anonymous FTP from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu.
For UNIX, see /UNIX/XImage and /UNIX/XDataSlice. Source is available.
