I read in a recent edition of a popular Photographic magazine that Kodak's revolutionary new Photo CD system, which takes photographic images taken on a standard camera and converts them into a digital format, is based around a hyped-up computer workstation; in the photo accompanying the article was a man working on an image with a Sun workstation (it looked like a Sparcstation). Does anybody know what is the actual hardware configuration used, and what kind of software is used in these machines? I was very surprised to read that a machine such as this was used for such image processing, as to digitise a photographic image, store the resulting data file, and then save onto Compact Disc format not only requires a huge amount of backing storage space (assuming you aim to reproduce the image quality obtainable by modern camera film), but also a very high-powered system to process this information. I would have assumed that the task would have been carried-out on something on a much larger scale! Any details? Thanks, Darryl Humphrey. -- ------------------------------------------------- All great inventions were made.......IN THE BATH All World problems are solved........IN THE BATH All acts of goodwill are conceived...IN THE BATH ...

My understanding of the Photo CD system is that the workstation is mostly a glorified controller for the scanner and CD mastering devices. The reason that a UNIX workstation is used is because of the large disk space requirements. If any image processing is done, it's not very heavy duty. Well, a "typical" full resolution PhotoCD image (2048 x 3072, 24 bit color) compresses to about 4MB on the CD. That doesn't require an inordinate amount of backing store. As I understand it, this is lossless compression. -- Marc Kaufman (kaufman@CS.Stanford.EDU)
