Seeking Geomorphometrics

Community of spatial researchers,

We are interested in a terrain classification method whereby
elevation values from a DEM and derivatives such as slope, aspect,
and curvature are combined to predict a single variable (Y) that
describes the morphology of polygonal areas, such as variable
(Y) = f[slope,aspect,elevation...].

By analyzing the frequency distribution of the Terrain variable
(Y), we could then set limits that could be used to produce a
thematic map. For example, a 3 class map may be produced and labels
such as smooth, undulating, and rough may be assigned.

Our immediate objective is to use this method to stratify
forest cutblock areas by terrain morpholgy to analyse the amount of
residual error in boundary placement and areas. Cutblocks will be
derived from satellite images, and from simple-georeferenced and
orthocorrected aerial photographs.

I would be interested and grateful to hear from anybody with
experience, thoughts, ideas, references, or whatever regarding this
topic, and will post a summary of responses.

Michael.
