Howdy, I'm bemoaning my fate: I must build a real-time MPEG II codec in about a year. Those of you familiar with MPEG II know that the designers went to great pains to make the encoder as complex and computation intensive as possible, in order to spare complexity/computation in the decoder. They succeeded so well that just the motion estimation section of a real-time encoder will take 60-100 ASICs (full search). Naturally I want to explore the alternatives to full search. Can anybody refer me to motion estimation algorithms/hardware/theroy that may help?
