I'm sure that we can do a searching on public domain by keywords. For example, we can search for softwear or reference on wavelet by keyword 'wavelet'. Dose anybody know how to do this? Thanks in advance! Haihong Li

Do you have a need for material that you can use without worrying about copyright limitations? Very little of the material posted to news is public domain, and you will find no books in the last 17 years that are. Some software is released that way, but not much. >For >example, we can search for softwear or reference on wavelet by keyword >'wavelet'. Dose anybody know how to do this? It depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for software from an ftp site, you can use archie to look for file names. If you have access to WAIS, you can search the ftpable-readme's database for keywords. If you are looking for books, you can telnet to many University libraries. OSU's library is available at oasis.kerr.orst.edu. Or, if you are looking for material from this newsgroup, you can either 1) find the raw newsspool and grep for the words you want, or 2) get a gopher client and make a link to skyking.oce.orst.edu port 70, and in the area "Information from the Coastal Imaging Lab", you will find a WAIS database for the sci.image.processing archive. Obtaining gopher would be your most productive method. The library catalogs I mentioned earlier are available through gopher at the UMN gopher server. If you haven't the slightest clue as to what archie or gopher or WAIS are, talk to your system admin. He should be able to get them for you. The instruction on how to obtain, install and configure these packages are beyond the scope of this group.

I think the orig poster was talking about archie, the ftp archive finder.
