I'm looking for documentation [formal or informal] on the specifics of
the file format that is commonly referred to JPEG or JPG [i.e.,
FILENAME.JPG or FILENAME.JPEG] ... you know, for the *.JPG files that
show up in the alt.binaries.pictures.* groups.
I assume that this isn't just a naming convention [the use of the
.JPG/.JPEG extension] to mark TIFF V6.0 files which use the JPEG/DCT
compression extensions.
Information by reference or by value (i.e., pointers or e-mailed
copies) would be appreciated. (I'm not interested in pointers to
existing conversion programs; and I'm only slightly interested in code
that reads and writes these files. I'd really prefer something akin to
a format spec.)
Also I'd appreciate knowing the relationship between the data commonly
stored in these files and the revision level of the JPEG spec.
If anyone can help, I'd prefer e-mail, but I don't mind posted
followups (it's just that I don't keep up with this newsgroup).
Thanks in advance.
