Yes,
I thought that sci.image.processing was going to be relavent but until this
article I havn't understood a word of it for months! However, I believe this
newsgroup was set up to deal with 'Image processing techniques relating to
remote sensing applications' so it really depends on what you mean be
remote sensing. I want a group to discuss SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING (and I
suppose similar sensors on aircraft etc), with relavence to environmental
processes (weather, geology, land use, etc) on the Earth and indeed other
planets. This presently crossesgeology and meterology newsgroups but isn't
really the place to dicsuss Radar vs IR, AVHRR vs Landsat vs Spot vs etc.
Overall I would consider a newsgroup sci.geo.remote.sensing or some such
group to be useful........

I agree with this.

Also, as a request, I am looking for satellite image data with
associated ground truth. Does anyone know of an archive site
with such data? Or, does anyone on this net have such data that
they will be willing to share? I'm working on neural nets and
satellite image classification and would be willing to pass on
results, experiences etc.

I'l be also willing to open up some kind of archive site if there is
sufficient satellite data available.

Sufficient!
What sort of disk space do you have? Surely anyone doing serious satellite
remote sensing has many GBytes of data, and they keep most of it off line.

I could send you some data, it would be Meteosat Thermal Infra Red. The ground
truth is all rainfall data as we use statistical relationships to estimate rainfall
for parts of Africa. A bit unfair on the network though sending satellite data
from the UK.

As for this idea of a new remote sensing group. What is it that you want to discuss
which is part of remote sensing but not image processing, geography, agriculture,
meteorology? I think the 'remote sensors' should stay here, sure not everyone
understands everything, thats why this whole news thing is here. Then again if
you want to talk about methods for collecting ground truth for crop yields,
perhaps this isn't the best place.

I would recommend that any one who is interested in remote
sensing, satellite images, application of RS to geo.. meteoro.. etc.
(and doesn't alraedy know this) have a look at
	comp.infosystems.gis
Sorry I haven't got the charter of c.i.g handy, but things like
this frequently crop up there (whether they belong there or not
might be a matter for discussion ...)

There are two places on the network that I have found useful for GENERAL
discussion on "satellite remote sensing".

1.	An occasional source (and a good place to ask questions) is the
	newsgroup COMP.INFOSYSTEMS.GIS

Obviously the main focus is GIS (Geographic Information Systems),
but many Remote Sensers are closely "linked" to GIS, and
many GISers consider remote sensing to be a subset of GIS.

2.	A specific remote sensing DICUSSION GROUP exists called IMAGRS-L.
To access this you must MAIL a subscription to

		LISTSERV@CSEARN.BITNET

	with the following message:

		subscribe IMAGRS-L "your name"

The down-side of this is that it is not used very much (and when it
is, it may "clog up" your mail reader).

My general "Aussie" perspective is that a lot of remote sensing people, even
in universities, are not using the network. Specifically in Australia, two
of our MAJOR centres for remote sensing (and land information) have not
bothered to access the network (even though our Federal Govt has made access
to this network FREE to all research scientists in the public sector).

Fortunately, the CSIRO (Australia's public sector research organisation,
very active in remote sensing) and the RMIT Centre for Remote Sensing ARE
on the network.

Cheers

Andrew
