Ftp-sites containing image data/WHERE?

Could anybody send me info on ftp-sites containing downloadable image
data (LandSat etc.), or info on where to get this. Different data
formats posts no problems.

LandSat data is copyright protected as is SPOT data. It is very unlikely that you
would be able to find (legal) ftp sites with such data unless it has already
been subjected to some sort of major processing.

My best advice to anyone looking for some good, cheap, contemporary data for
algorithm development etc., would be to take advantage of Eosats offer for
Landsat 6 simulated data (including 15m panchromatic). This data set (I don't
know the geographical location or extent of the data) is being offered for $25.
Pretty good deal.

GRASS, a public-domain GIS developed by the US Army Corps of
Engineers comes with some sample remotely-sensed data from Spearfish, North
(South?) Dakota, and maybe more. I've not played with it for a long time,
but I imagine the current archive still contains that data. Please don't
ask me for more details, I don't have them; I just helped install the
package some time ago.

For free software, it's a great starting package, but beware the
code, it even *acts* like army code: if your data gets out of line, the
corps dumps on you. ;-)

A quick search through the ftpable-readmes WAIS service for keyword
"grass" yields the following likely archive sites:

   1: Sc: 1000, l: 66 '/alex/edu/uiuc/cso/uxc/pub/grass/4.0/README'
   2: Sc: 875, l: 15 '/alex/edu/uiuc/cso/uxc/pub/grass/4.0/manual.ps/README'
   3: Sc: 875, l: 48 '/alex/uk/ac/ic/doc/puffin/graphics/grass/README'
   4: Sc: 875, l: 48 '/alex/uk/ac/ic/doc/src/graphics/grass/README'
   5: Sc: 531, l: 2 '/alex/mil/army/cecer/cerl/pub/grass/README'
   6: Sc: 500, l: 3 '/alex/edu/uiuc/cso/uxc/pub/grass/README'
   7: Sc: 469, l: 4 '/alex/edu/uiuc/cso/uxc/pub/grass/contrib/README'

To interpret these, drop the "/alex" prefix, then read off hostnames in
reverse order, followed by the pathname to the README file (e.g., number 1
means "ftp uxc.cso.uiuc.edu; cd pub/grass/4.0; get README")

and lots of other people (I'm a regular contributor).

the official site is moon.cecer.army.mil

like he said, he hasn't "played with it for a long time." GRASS just
keeps getting better and better. For more information, look for
a file called grasshopper (the case may not be correct) on moon.cecer.army.mil.
It describes two mailing lists devoted to grass usage and development.

Also see comp.infosystems.gis.
