I would be happy to receive comments about the best LANDSAT bands and their RBG assignments for geologic interpretation of LANDSAT images. I am using the program called RSVGA. Thanks. Responses can be sent direct to me address above or on BITNET to Noavk at Portland.

Band Channel 2 blue 4 green 5 red For Landsat TM. You may wish up band 2 by 10% (or knock down the others by 10%). Works well for me (most vegetation is green; most dirt is brown, red, and gray; water is pretty blue). Mark R. Thomsen

Thomsen We have found that the 4,5,7 (rgb) combination works well in humid/wet regions. For some of the work we are doing here in the dryer southwest we use a 7,4,2 (rgb). Band 7 coincides with an absorption band caused by hydroxyl ions in minerals, thus useful for geologist looking at rocks. We also find useful ratios of bands 5 and 7 for the mapping hydrothermally altered rocks (Sabins 1987). I would like to here from others using Landsat or other remote sensing/image processing applications for geological studies! =================== Robert Zimdar Systems Coordinator voice: (619) 594 2557 SDSU Geological Sciences FAX: (619) 594 4372 Scientific Visualization Lab email: rzimdar@geology.sdsu.edu

Thank you to all have posted or sent e-mail responses to my query. If interested in a listing of the approaches that have been recommended for geological mapping. Drop me a note at Novak at Portland.
