apparent resolution vs. bits/pixel

I would like to do reseach on apparent resolution in function of pixel
depth (bits/pixel). Could someone forward me, or post the references on
this subject?

More specifically, I am interested in generating a high resolution binary
image from a medium resolution gray scale image. One immediate application
for this technique is OCR where threshold-only-based binarization of the
original image causes many problems including broken lines, etc.

Thank you in advance.

There's a recent paper "Inverse Halftoning" by C.M.Miceli & K.J.Parker
of the U of Rochester in Journal of Electronic Imaging 1(2) p 143-151.
(Apr 1992).

The Journal of Electronic Imaging is rather new. I had not heard of it
myself until a month or so ago. I am posting this on the net because I
thought others might like to give it a look.

(P.S. I've no connections with JEI)
