Irish has optional contractions. For example, to say "I understand that" one could write/say "Tuigeann m'e sin." or "Tuigim sin." Either one is grammatically correct. In the modern language it occurs in the first person singular/plural. Also, in the spoken language, pronominals (the prepositional pronouns) are often contracted. "Agam" becomes "a'm" (at me, literally) Some people do write this contraction as well.
