I rode the public bus to high school every day for almost three years
in Los Angeles in the late 1970s, and made many other trips by bus as
well in that period -- to shopping, the movies, the library, etc. 
(I had no car at the time.)  It was inconvenient, but possible.

I have to admit, however, that it was a BIG change from Montreal, which
has great public transportation.  It took me about a year of living
in L.A. before I was no longer depressed by that change in my lifestyle.
