Well, many people have responded to this one, but there are a few points I'd like to reiterate: 1) Yes, Karl, you are a geezer, and an LA-native one at that. 2) The examples I've included above are the *exact* reason why I'd just as soon stick with the numbers! If I'm going from Culver City to Ontario (the local Ontario, that is), what do I need with "Santa Monica" or "San Bernadino"? Besides, I find it fascinating that when I'm in Seattle, it's the same I-5, and when I'm in San Antonio, it's the same I-10. What a connected country this is. 3) I'm a different kind of geezer: I harken back to my youth in Ohio, when "the interstate" could only mean one, since the others were 'way far away. (I can just hear it: "Take the Columbus to the Youngstown...") Or, I could harken back to my days in central New Jersey, when "The Parkway" and "The Turnpike" were all one needed to know. -- Wilson H. Bent, Jr. whb@usc.edu USC University Comp.
