In Northern California people use numbers, in Southern California they use names. I have never noticed as subtle a difference as whether the word 'highway' was used. If you read the original note you can see it - Ventura Freeway, Pacific Coast Highway (PCH, to true So Cal citizens). Often a single freeway in So Cal will be referred to by half a dozen different names depending on what stretch of it is being talked about - very confusing for strangers. In Northern Cal the 580 is the 580 regardless of whether you're talking about the Oakland portion or the Pleasanton portion - it's all the same highway. -- -Jeff ===================================================================== "I fear our conversion has gone awry. Let me first reaffirm your personhood and your right to forcefully express your opinions. Let me announce my continuing affection for you and suggest a cooling-off period in which we both can discover areas of mutual agreement that will lead in time to a settlement of our grievances."
